Although tried-and-true methods for caring for your health while sick include staying hydrated, there are few additional tasks you need to take heed of in the event of a sickness such as a cold or the flu. If you find yourself sick, make sure you continue to take care of your oral health to ensure further ailments do not arise within your teeth and gums.

You should continue to brush and floss your teeth daily. Harmful stomach acids from vomiting will damage your tooth enamel, so it is important to clean after you are sick. However, never brush your teeth immediately after vomiting, as your teeth are extra sensitive at this time and it can lead to dental erosion. As an alternative substitute for brushing, use mouthwash or chew sugarless gum after throwing up.

To prevent contamination, never allow anyone else to ever use your toothbrush and never use anyone else’s toothbrush. If you have a cold or flu, you may need to replace your brush once you are over your sickness.
